Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge

$ · Denver, Colorado

A 15,000-acre prairie sanctuary ten miles from downtown, where a herd of American bison actually roams. This is my go-to for a first day in town: it's flat, it's low, and the 11-mile Wildlife Drive lets your lungs adjust to a mile of altitude while you scan for deer, raptors, and waterfowl.

Try: The Lake Ladora Loop and the 11-mile Wildlife Drive to find the resident bison herd
